Community initiative helps reduce waste and fosters sustainability
Dubai, UAE | March 13, 2017 – Your yoga and fitness wear can now find a new home, thanks to a budding community initiative, Pre-loved Yogawear. The project engages local businesses as well as encourages community members to help reduce waste, give back to others and foster a more sustainable lifestyle – and it’s all for a good cause.
Spearheaded by Elaine Kelly – founder of Yogafest ME – Pre-loved Yogawear was launched as a way to encourage others to tread lightly on the planet and help reduce their footprint. As the yoga industry in the UAE grows rapidly, so do our wardrobes – which is why many of the items we keep to collect dust, that have been used and loved should now make their way to a better place.
“I made a personal commitment this year to say no to waste, and to not buy anything new for one year,” says Kelly. “For example, I just recently purchased a great pair of pre-loved Stella McCartney leggings for only 25aed through my initiative.”
So how does it work? Several established local businesses in the industry have partnered with Pre-loved Yogawear to provide boxes at their locations where customers can leave their loved but no longer wanted gear. In addition to apparel, bags and yoga mats may also be donated. These items are then inspected and sold at Yogafest’s many events throughout the year, which draw in over 10,000 people annually. Each item is sold for only 25 Dirhams and all proceeds collected are donated to charity.
Pre-loved Yogawear boxes can currently be found at Inspire Yoga Fitness and Pilates, Urban Yoga Dubai, and 136.1 Yoga Studio. Local activewear boutique yApparel is also participating, and when customers donate their pre-loved gear, they instantly receive a 10% off voucher on any new items purchased.
